"The nature of our business here is recycling rather than reclamation so we have a slightly different approach to that of a salvage yard. We accept timber in all shapes and sizes because we can see it has a future, if not in its original capacity - as a door for instance but as part of a new piece of furniture or an installation. We are building unique one-off pieces of furniture from segments of paneling, doors and broken furniture, giving it a new and very contemporary feel."
I have worked as an interior designer for the past 25 years in a practical sense but also on TV and as an author of practical how-to-do-it books such as Folk Art, Style and Design; Painted Woodcraft and most recently Eco Deco (Apple Press) first published in 2000 and re-published in 2007. It deals exclusively with contemporary design using recycled materials.
My involvement with the H&BWRP in the past year has enabled the project to expand into new areas. In February we built an exact-size framework of a shop in Holborn, London so that we could construct wall cladding, shop window bases, freestanding units and seating in our Hastings workshop.
We were then able to take everything up and install it in one day and The Folk Store opened to much acclaim the following week.
Later in the Spring we supplied the Conran Shop with a wonderful selection of brightly painted reclaimed front doors and skirting boards for a shop fitting installation which led us on to working with them on their Christmas window display. We built 40 natural recycled wood plinths in a range of sizes that presented a stunning contrast to their Christmas range of luxury designer gifts that were back-draped with red velvet.
Do get in touch if you have a project or a piece of furniture that you would like built. I have designed built-in kitchens, shelving systems, DJ rooms, bar furniture, beds, chairs and have pictures of these please email for more details.
I can also draw plans, visualize your ideas and make them happen using the project's rich source of interesting recycled wood.
